Treating several openings as identical without verified site data often leads to installation gaps, incorrect frames, threshold conflicts, or doors being delivered to the wrong location.

Establish One Measurement Standard

Every party should use the same terminology and reference points. Width and height must be measured at several positions because site openings may taper or be out of square.

For a custom entry door, the measurement sheet should record the top, middle, and bottom widths; left, center, and right heights; both diagonals; wall thickness; floor level; and any visible irregularities.

Measurements should identify whether they were taken from finished surfaces or structural material. Photographs can support the record, but each image should be connected to a specific opening code.

Give Every Opening a Unique Identity

Similar-looking entrances may have different dimensions, handing, frame depths, finishes, or hardware. Grouping them under a general room or model name creates avoidable mistakes.

A unique code should connect each opening to:

  • Site location and floor

  • Verified dimensions

  • Single- or double-leaf configuration

  • Interior and exterior orientation

  • Opening direction and active leaf

  • Wall and threshold conditions

  • Finish and decorative design

  • Lock, hinge, handle, and accessory schedule

  • Packaging and delivery phase

The same code must appear on drawings, production documents, inspection records, packages, and installation plans.

Define Tolerances Before Production

Door dimension tolerance control requires limits for both the building opening and manufactured components. A production tolerance cannot compensate for an opening that varies significantly from the approved site measurement.

Installation clearance should be large enough for positioning, adjustment, fixing, insulation, and sealant, but not so large that anchors become ineffective or surrounding finishes cannot cover the gap.

The correct allowance depends on the frame profile, wall material, door dimensions, installation method, and local construction practice. Large or heavy doors may require tighter control because small deviations can affect hinge loading and lock alignment.

Separate Standard Sizes from True Variations

After verification, openings can be grouped only when all critical dimensions and configurations fall within the approved range. Standardization can reduce drawing work, production changes, and installation confusion, but it should be based on measured evidence.

Where variations are small, an adjustable frame detail or coordinated finishing allowance may offer a practical solution. Larger differences usually require separate production sizes.

Oversized dimensions, narrow wall returns, unusual frame depths, or inconsistent floor levels should be reviewed individually rather than forced into a standard model.

Control Drawing Changes and Approvals

Site conditions may change after the first measurement because of structural corrections, added cladding, or revised floor finishes. Each drawing must show its revision number, date, opening code, and approval status.

Superseded information should be removed from production use. When a change arrives after material preparation, the manufacturer should identify the affected units and explain the impact on cost, schedule, and completed components.

Written approval is essential. Informal messages without a revised drawing can create conflicting instructions between engineering, production, quality control, and site teams.

Inspect Dimensions at Critical Stages

As a custom manufacturing supplier, we recommend verifying dimensions after frame fabrication, after door-leaf assembly, and during final fitting. Inspection should include frame width and height, diagonals, leaf size, perimeter gaps, hinge position, lock alignment, threshold clearance, and overall operation.

For first-time or highly varied orders, one pre-production unit can confirm how approved measurements translate into the finished assembly. Results should then be applied to the remaining opening codes.

Accurate site records, controlled tolerances, traceable drawings, and staged inspections allow varied door sizes to be produced efficiently without losing installation accuracy or project-level consistency.
