Why Do Door Coatings Peel Under Sunlight?

Door coatings peel under sunlight when ultraviolet radiation and repeated heating expose weaknesses in surface preparation, adhesion, curing, or coating selection. Sunlight may accelerate failure, but peeling usually indicates that the coating system and steel substrate were not adequately matched or controlled.

Sunlight Affects Both Coating and Steel

Ultraviolet radiation gradually breaks down some resins and pigments. The surface may first lose gloss, fade, or develop a powdery layer known as chalking. Once the binder deteriorates, moisture can enter more easily and worsen existing adhesion defects.

Solar heat creates another form of stress. A dark painted steel door can reach a much higher surface temperature than the surrounding air. Daily heating and nighttime cooling repeatedly expand and contract the steel and coating at different rates.

When the coating lacks flexibility or has poor adhesion, cracks and lifted edges can develop. Water then reaches the substrate and may cause under-film corrosion.

Surface Contamination Weakens Adhesion

Coating must bond to a clean, properly prepared substrate. Oil, dust, oxide, welding residue, fingerprints, moisture, and release agents can remain on fabricated steel if pretreatment is incomplete.

These contaminants create weak zones between the metal and coating. The door may pass an initial visual inspection, but heat and outdoor exposure can gradually separate the layers.

Edges, welds, corners, lock cutouts, and decorative joints require particular attention. Coverage is often thinner in these areas, and contamination may be harder to remove.

Incorrect Curing Creates Hidden Defects

Applied coating needs the correct curing temperature and duration. Under-curing may leave the film soft or poorly bonded, while excessive curing can affect color, flexibility, or appearance.

Steel thickness, door construction, production speed, and oven loading influence how the metal reaches the required temperature. Monitoring only the oven setting does not always confirm that the workpiece itself experienced the intended curing cycle.

Film thickness must also remain within the suitable range. An extremely thick layer is not automatically more durable and may increase cracking risk around joints or formed edges.

Coating Selection Must Reflect Outdoor Exposure

The UV resistance door coating issue is often traced to a finish selected mainly for color rather than environmental performance. Indoor-grade or sheltered-use systems may not tolerate prolonged sunlight, rain, and thermal cycling.

Before selecting the finish, the project should identify:

  1. Facade orientation and hours of direct sun

  2. Local maximum and minimum temperatures

  3. Rainfall, humidity, and condensation conditions

  4. Coastal salt or industrial pollutants

  5. Presence and depth of a canopy

  6. Door color and expected heat absorption

  7. Required gloss and color retention

  8. Cleaning products used during service

A coating suitable for a shaded apartment corridor cannot automatically be used on a fully exposed villa entrance.

Installation Damage Can Start Local Peeling

Drilling, grinding, welding, or cutting the finished door on site can break the protective layer. Hardware changes may leave raw edges around locks, closers, access-control devices, or cables.

Construction chemicals and cement residue can also attack the surface. Protective film must be removed within the recommended period because prolonged sunlight can harden adhesive and create uneven surface conditions.

Scratches should be repaired with a compatible system before exterior exposure. Applying ordinary paint over damaged powder coating may produce a visible patch without restoring full protection.

Diagnose Peeling by Its Pattern

Peeling directly from clean-looking steel often indicates weak pretreatment or adhesion. Rust beneath lifted coating suggests moisture penetration and under-film corrosion. Cracking around bends may point to limited flexibility or excessive film build.

Widespread fading without separation is different from peeling and requires a different response. The affected coating should be inspected before deciding whether local repair or complete refinishing is appropriate.
